I'll bring potato/potatoe salad made with non-spoilable mayonnaise, rich in soy products and best of all...made in China, which means quality...ummm...umm...good.
OK, I forgot I committed to meatless meaty meat, but I'm changing my mind and going with the Tater Salad, (that's potato salad for you Yankees) unless someone really wants meatless meaty meat (with the extra gritty meat texture). (and I have nothing against Yankees except when they beat hte Rangers, but I do have a problem with parentheses, (apparently))

So Far we only have these commitments to our Sunday Pot-Luck Cook Out at Stovall Park(see bottom of page). I don't want to assign food to people, but if you're having trouble coming up with something, let me get you started.

Stovall Park Pavilion Picnic list:
1. $10 per everyone over 18
2. Adult beverages of your choice (pop, beer, whatever) NO GLASS CONTAINERS
3. The Meat (weiners, hamburger, turkey burger) or any of the many meatless meats for your group.

All ice, and the equipment to run the hot Grills will be provided. Buns will be provided. Plastic dinnerware will be provided.

We need: Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, Fruit, Salads, Desserts, Chips, Salsa, Beans, Bean Salads, Condiments (Salt/pepper, mayo, mustard, ketchup), Watermelon(s), etc...

**Don't forget to bring the necessary serving tools for what you bring.

How about this?..We bring our own meat, Taco Bueno, or whatever fulfills our personal needs, as well as a bit of Pot luck faire. We could bring in a short order barbecue chef (complete with hat!) to wrangle with the coals, cook the steaks, and turn the Goat so it won't burn. Chef's assistant could help with the spread. This would free us up to play more volleyball, drink more beer, and stuff.

In 1818 Mary Shelley unleashed FRANKENSTEIN, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS on the literary world. This Gothic cautionary tale warned of an Industrial Revolution spinning out of control. Man, mad with arrogance, dared to enter the realm of God - the creation of human life! Victor von Frankenstein cobbled together pieces and parts (now pieces is pieces, but parts is parts) of discarded human remains to construct his monster. I've always thought he was particularly lucky to have found body parts of similarly sized men. Had he used Shaquille O'Neal's left leg and my right the poor monster would have just spun counter-clockwise when it tried to move forward.

But I digress, my point was that Ms. Shelley warned of the horror of patchwork living creatures at a time when harvesting the DEAD to save the LIVING was a dread thought. Today, we can participate in a process thought noble and compassionate by simply indicating our willingness to be "harvested" on the back of our Drivers' License. In the last 60 years, medicine has saved countless lives by attaching pieces and parts from the dead (soooo pig! sometimes even from the dead of other species) to the sick and dying. Medical ethicists, philosophers and theologians struggled with early transplants - thinking them "a step too far" and evidence of Man's arrogant attempt to usurp God's power. Luckily, those arguments abated and settled themselves as the lives saved bore evidence of God's will for Medicine.

They have resurfaced, however, as we have begun to master the Human Genome and all of the potential industries that might flow from the application of our new Knowledge. Stem cells and genes are just smaller pieces and parts, really. We are only just glimpsing the "blueprint" of human life - yet already the ethicists, philosophers and theologians have begun their emotional moral hand-wringing. Have we, at last, gone "too far?" Will God smite us for our prideful folly? Is there no end to Man's Curiosity and the lengths to which he will go to apply cutting-edge Knowledge to improve all of our lives?

I hope not.

Bring Your Own Meat! Sunday August 5 Stovall Park

Quit thinking dirty thoughts. We've decided overwhelmingly to bring our own hotdogs, brats, burgers, chicken, shrimp, spitted goat, alligator, snake, portobello mushrooms, etc...to our day at Stovall Park.

You will also be required to bring your own Beverages as long as they are NOT IN GLASS CONTAINERS! Cans, plastic drinkware, sippy's, big bowls of liquor.

I will provide charcoal briquettes, lighter fluid and matches for the grill(s) in the Pavilion area and coolers of ice.

Here's the hard part. Everyone attending will need to volunteer for one of these categories IN ADDITION to the meat and drinks for themselves or their group. With more than one person per category, you need not bring enough, let's say COLE SLAW for 80 people (my guesstimate). Work within your budgets and use common sense. To pay for the Park Pavilion, the Beer Liscence and Name Tags/Program we will be collecting $10 a head on the weekend of the Reunion. Here are the categories, please pony up on this site in the COMMENTS area. Once a category has 4 or 5 contributors or so, please select another.

2. ***Buns (hot dog, hamburger, brat) ALL by Justine Trout Chapura - THANKS JUSTINE!***
3. Condiments (salt/pepper, mustard, mayonaise, ketchup, pickle relish)
4. Veggies (crudite, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, olives, onions)
5. Fruit (platters of mixed fruit, water melons, etc)
6. Sides (cole slaw, potato salad, beans, chips, salsa)
7. Desserts (use your imagination)

It is my hope that we can sign up for things in the next 2 weeks so I don't have to assign individuals to specific categories. Since our cost for the weekend is so minimal, I anticipate that everyone will participate generously. Every pot-luck I've ever been involved with has ended up with way to much food. I doubt this will be any different.

Please COMMENT on the blog what you intend to bring or email me with your decision by JULY 15. I'm REALLY looking forward to this.

Remember, Friday night at Margie Quigley's is BYOBeverage & J. Gillians is CASH BAR so don't forget your plastic money! Maps will be distributed in soft copy (email) by the end of July.

Okay! Time for another "audience participation" posting on the Reunion Blog. So far we have:

...I'm not sure what that means...Golly, has it been two weeks? Feels like longer in a shorter kinda way (breathe, stop typing). The Reunion is still ON for the weekend of AUGUST 3, 4 and 5. So we have a month and change to commit, come up with our price (around $20 a head?) and make our plane reservations! Here is the plan so far:

Now that our three days in August are sketched in, we need to concentrate on:

1. Who is attending? I haven't gotten firm RSVPs from several of you that I expect to be there. (All about me, sorry.)

2. What expenses will be incurred and how do we pay them off?

Okay, Executive Decision Time Again

Okay, I just had an "Executive Board Meeting" (Me and Dan Sinnott) and we have decided to swap the Friday and Saturday night plans. We can reserve a room for FREE at J Gilligans on Saturday night and I love FREE!
Here's the NEW Itinerary:

1. Friday August 3rd. We convene at someone's home ( we have some offers and rumors of offers) from 6PM to 9 or 10PM for those of us who want to go to Six Flags Friday night to get our roller coaster fix.

Tempus Keeps Fugit-ing - PLEASE COMMENT

Wow. I sent out 90-some odd emails to the 81-83 Grads last week, 25 of which are planning on bringing themselves and their families to Arlington the weekend of August 4 & 5 and no one has any ideas for Saturday night August 4th.

We have Sunday locked in (thanks to Trisha Quirk and Daryl Adams) - all day grilling, BBQ-ing, volleyball-ing, visiting - excellent. I hope we can start about 10am and continue as long as people can stay before their weekends must...end.

I think an all-day Sunday, One Day event is cool (Texas in August HOT not cool) but here are a few ideas for Saturday night August 4th for you to mull over and PLEASE Comment about.

Over 25 of you 96 have committed to the Reunion. Can I get 10 or 15 COMMENTs on the blog (www.jamesbowievolunteers.blogspot.com) on these ideas? Pretty please?All would be paid for by the Grads in attendance.

1. We find a restaurant/hotel that can accommodate 30 to 50 adults for food & drinks for a 7-midnight to-do. We would need to front a deposit that would require participation of the attendees $$$.

2. Someone of us in the DFW area VOLUNTEERS to host 30 to 50 of us in their home for a BYOWhatever gathering. Paid for by those in attendance.

3. Someone belongs to or knows of a club space (VFW, DAR, K of C, Elks, etc) to host a BYOWhatever evening with a DJ and name tags.

4. We just have an all-day event on Sunday August 5th with our families in the Stovall Park Pavilion and repay Trisha and Daryl's generosity. This is the Sunday-One day opton.

Whatever we choose we must move quickly. I need help from someone(s) in the DFW area to help set up a Saturday Event IF we are to have one. I'll be down in time to help with set up at Stovall Park.

I think having a place to meet Friday and Saturday night would be a good choice. Out-of-towners may need to travel home on Sunday. On Friday we could meet at J. Glligan's, and on Saturday...well another place someone could suggest. Doesn't have to be anything formal, just meet and mingle.

Did y'all know it was so HOT there in May. Why didn't more of us die from exposure each summer? And more importantly...

...WHAT ARE WE DOING ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 4TH? WE NEED SOMEONE IN THE DFW AREA TO PULL A VFW OR K OF C OR ELK OR MOOSE CLUB OUT OF THEIR...HAT. Or come up with an alternative solution for Saturday night, August 4th.

Anybody have a big house? We won't be more than 50 total judging from the RSVPs. Somebody must have done well enough to host 50 people over a period of a few hours...maybe 7 to midnight? I'll even help throw people out if need be. I may be old and fat but I'm a superb bouncer.

I can't find a place from my remote Minnesota local. Trisha Quirk stepped up for the Stovall Park Pavillion. We need someone to "step up" for the Saturday night before. If all else fails, we'll "tailgate" all day on Sunday August 5th and there will be NO SATURDAY "GET TOGETHER." That's not what we want but we need a "hero" to save Saturday night!

You'll never stop my Blogging...NEVER! Actually any of you denizens of the Metro-Plex that remembers me from High School I'd love to pre-Reunion visit with. Saving,of course the "OH MY GOD IT'S SO GOOD TO SEE YOU! HOW ARE YOU? YOU LOOK LIKE HELL! (arms oustretched) for when we see each other in August.

Although with my short-term memory measured in nano-seconds now it won't matter.

Time For VOLUNTEERS!

We know when, AUGUST 4 & 5. We know where, at least we know where on Sunday the 5th. So we really need to start gtting a head count for attendance. We also need an idea or food, if we go catered BBQ we'll need a caterer AND money to pay them. We are using a space at the park that has BBQ grills but that means putting together money so that local shoppers can stock up on hamburger patties, chicken breasts, hot dogs, bratwursts all the trimmings plus charcoal brickets, disposable table ware.

So we have to make some decisions. BUT FIRST...WHO'S COMING? I'll Spam an invitation to everyone on my email list. Pease RSVP soon.

This morning I got the most URGENT email from TRISHA QUIRK, Class of 1983 (pictured at the right) about the availbility of Park spaces in Texas this Summer. All Park Pavillions (picnic tables, grills, iron bars, corrugated iron roofs) are booked for Saturdays through October. So, in Executive Session (inside my big'ol skull) I SWAPPED events for days. TRISHA (let all Volunteers Praise her) is going to reserve the Stovall Park Pavillon for SUNDAY, August 5th.See the Stovall Park Link to the Right. She is fronting the $250 reservation fee out of her own pocket. We have an option on an additional $50 BEER fee, who wants to send TRISHA a fin for the brew...?
Our BEER FEE Hero is Daryl Adams also Class of 1983 and pictured above.. That gets us a certificate from the City of Arlingstone for BYO! I'm Class of 1982. I guess as things and expenses progress we'll see similar VOLUNTEER YOUR ASS OFF SPIRIT from all Graduees!

All this means is that our Adult Graduate only day will be Saturday, August 4 so even if you overrindulge you can take up lawn space on Sunday.

Or since the Sunday is now the BBQ, Tailgate and socialize day, MAYBE SIX FLAGS could be Saturday night?! C'mon guys I have Valley Fair here and for the MN State Fair, they carve the Dairy Princesses bust in butter...hundreds of REDNECKS debating whether her butter boobies are even...

I think we need to find an adequate picnic park area for us to grill, picnic, tailgate and really mingle visit and then those of us (me!) who want to hit the coasters until the park closes can go for an early evening/late night coaster party!

I'm sure we'll have to put a deposit down on reserved picnic areas. So don't be surprised when we begin to solicit funds to pay down Payments. I'm sure some of us will be fronting arrangements on credit cards. We'll publish receipt information on this blog so our money shifting and spending will be transparent and reviewable.

Next Week, we plan the Adult Only Reunion Cage Match. There will be a cash bar (maybe just beer? easier to liscence?) And a supercool DJ that Justine knows as we PARTY HEARTY on Saturday August 4th!

Our First Town Hall Meeting - When?

Due to some feedback about the chosen dates for this shindig, I've decided (in consultation with a secret cabal of 82 Grads - I'm making that up) to try a Townhall meeting on the subject, using the "Comment" function on this site to gather opinion for a couple of weeks. "Comment" is located at the bottom of each post. You may comment anonymously, include a photo...whatever, I just sit here.

I'll let you in on a little secret, in January when Idecided to do this, I pulled the July dates out of my asterix so I'm not REALLY harboring a secret "Suicide by Sun" wish or anything, I just needed a date to point to. We can't avoid the heat without time travel which is expensive for families, so I say if we move the dates we move them toward the end of Summer, early Autumn. I like the idea of Six Flags but here in the middle of my midlife crisis, I'm not sure my judgement is all that sound. (Ask me about early onset "andropause" andro-damn-stop is more like it...)

So what, or when do you think we should get together? We'll leave it open to add Comments until May.

SIX (6) is how many 81-83 GRADS I have left on assmates.com, oops! I mean classholes.com or asswipe.something to email out of the total 744 I began with, It only allows me to email 50 in a rolling 24 hour period (for safety?) and tomorrow at 7:30am CST I can email the FINAL SIX!

Today classmates.com made me listen to TALKING SMILEYS all morning while I mailed to the VOLUNTEERS whose names were in the "w" range. The only thing MORE ANNOYING than SMILEYS on an email would be TALKING SMILEYS! Unless you could shoot at them and they died loud and gorey. Maybe EXPLODING SMILEYS for people who read their emails too slowly, they could start screaming seconds before they covered the email with gore!

But we're down to SIX! It looks like seven, but I'm, pretty sure FRANK ZAPPA didn't graduate from Bowie, good try numb-nuts.

My favorite web-ripoff, classmates.com, is once again dancing on my last gay nerve. There are 744 JBHS Grads from 1981-1983 in their database. However, classmates.com allows me to only email 50 classmates per day. How long will that take? Luckily I've done the math. In thirteen days, I can complete the task. The message is perfectly simple, the meaning is clear:

Don't let their smiles fool you. Pictured here is/are the World's only Mixed-Gender-Conjoined-Twin-International-Jewel-Theif or theives. Pursued by the FBI for over two decades, the pair made their escape through the porous US Mexican Border, leaving behind a lot of Jewelry store Guards with mild concussions. They are now believed secluded amongst the conjoined populace in Amsterdam.

We believe it is the intolerant staring of "single entity humans" that makes us such easy prey. Also the female, Shannon, speaks a variety of comedy dialects - hopelessly confusing attempts to capture them. They are joined at the skull. "Her half" has hair on it. We believe she is the mastermind because the male, David Ralston, never really stops smiling and laughs at everything she says - even when he doesn't get the reference.

They may be INTERPOL'S problem now but from the way they blend seemlessly into casual crowds, no doubt they will return Stateside.

If you'd "tuned in" to Timothy's life 15 years ago, you would have found him touring the U.S. and Europe with any of 8 different Productions. From EVITA to JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR to ANYTHING GOES to THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS to CAMELOT to MAME and to the ones that were so bad I'm trying to block them from my memory. Above, I'm featured with JULIETTE PROWSE (Nuthin' beats a Great Pair of Legs!)

Good God! Now what the hell was I going to post...? I 've just drawn a total pec, I mean blank! Oh! The 300. My profile on classmates.com has had at least 300 hits since I registered on January 18th. Oddly less that 60 people have chosen to "sign" my guestbook (How many gay men designed that site? Smells like dozens.) Equally strange is the number of hits that this site generates with a similarly strange dearth of responses. I have managed to amass about 70 working email addresses of interested Grads and will continue to drum up interest (and perhaps annoy to resentment?) for the Reunion and will occupy my GOLD MEMBER status on classmates.com through June. But We must try to coax our shy brothers and sisters out of the shadows and into the dappled light that shines down Memory Lane as we reaquaint ourselves.

My Hairline and Other Things To Look For At The Reunion

The wonderful thing about being male and over forty is that hair starts to disappear from places it's always been and appear in places that just never had hair. My hairline is racing to make a little island of hair on my forehead surrounded by a moat of scalp.

In the meantime, I could probably braid and bead the hair on my shoulders and back. Hunchack cornrows...mmm, sexy.

Here's my idea, and if you hate it feel free to shoot it down BUT ONLY if you have a constructive alternative. I excel at trashing the plans of others but kinda suck at presenting alternatives.

1. We're old and most of us still know a lot of people in Arlington even if we (like me in Minneapolis) have moved on. So let's do something fun we did when we weren't old and we lived there. SIX FLAGS OVER TEXAS on (of all the most horrible of days!) JULY 4th 2007! Crowds, kids, sweat, 100 degrees plus...classic North Texas Summertime fare.

2. I will work my contacts through my Dad and his wife to see what the Arlington Visitors and Hospitality types can do for us for our out of town guests.

3. I will also see what I can do to drum up a space for a second day Adult event when we're all sunburned and want to DRINK and DISCO. I'm pretty sure we've all seen enough crepe paper to last three lifetimes so if there's a cash bar a DJ and a mirror-ball...I'm good.

4. I'll also come up with some one-size-fits-all XXL T-Shirt or ball cap that we can get for cheap for everyone to help with recognition at the Theme Park.

Between those things and keeping the Information flowing through this site I'm feeling pretty good about my contribution so far. (I have my Mother to thank for the hint of Martyrdom in that last sentence.)

If you are a Metroplex native still, we'll need you drumming the low hanging branches finding as many of the 81-83 classmates we can find and getting their contact information which we can use this BLOG as a clearinghouse for. Also invited are any of the prom dates from any of the affore mentioned years.

If you, as I, have left North Texas, you need to start planning your summer vacation to include a trip to Texas for the 4th and 5th of July! First we get sunburned standing in line all day with our (well okay, who am I fooling) your children. Then we disco dance the following evening and with any luck there'll be cat fights and secret crushes revealed and that's just the men!

July 4th at Six Flags will be all day, risk of heat stroke, family fun.

July 5th will have a Cash Bar, mirror balls, loud music and just enough chairs to rest our dancing feet.

When Gutenberg began printing Bibles, intelligence on this planet began to expand geometrically.

When Timothy said he'd put himself in charge of the 25th Reunion (okay roughl) for the JBHS classes of 81-83 that same worldwide intelligence exploded exponentially. I have had more contact with dear friends, curious strangers puzzled detractors in the last 48 hours than in the last 20 something years of adulthood.

What's that spell? We (dear friends, and the rest) owe the City of Arlingstone, our Alma Mater and EACH OTHER the best two days of Summer 2007.

...and I don't mean in a good way. So as soon as we can, let's shift people to this site for official news and plans for the 25th Anniversary Reunion of the REAL Graduates of James Bowie High School. I figure anyone who graduated between 1981-1983.
